Like the Banque Nationale pour le Commerce et l’Industrie (BNCI), partner of the Tour de France for 10 years, the Banque Nationale de Paris (BNP) took back the “Tour Bank” jersey in 1966. Like this it continued to assign two mobile banking vans that followed the race routes. Here is a photo of its first participation in the sporting event. We see the mobile banking van, personalised with its name and the signature “Your bank,” stopped during a stage in Champigneulles, Lorraine (France).
BNP extends the BNCI’s commitment
As for the previous editions of the Tour de France, BNP makes available to the followers – officials, journalists, advertisers, technical directors and racers – its mobile banking van system. This lets it provide banking services at each stage town. The principle? Before each stage arrival, the bank employees collect funds from the local office of the BNP and man their bank counter from 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Cashing, payments, currency sales and foreign currency exchanges are some of the many operations they perform for the Tour de France village.
This sporting partnership was an opportunity for the BNP to associate its image with that of a powerful social event and like this to make itself known with the general public. And if the bank took a 5-year hiatus after the 1967 edition, it resumed its “bank tour” position in 1973. And it remained the Tour bank until 1985. In this context, BNP signed a contract with l’Equipeand the Parisien Libéré that gave it the exclusive banking service rights on the Tour de France in 1973, 1974 and 1975. If BNP Paribas has been associated with Tennis since 1973, the roots of its involvement as a sponsor go farther back.
